WE wrote earlier today that St Kilda was remaining confident that injured defender Sam Gilbert may have escaped serious injury after hyperextending his left knee in last night’s 26-point loss to Collingwood at Etihad Stadium.
The good news is that Gilbert’s ACL is fine.
The bad news is that he will need surgery anyway.
The club has this afternoon released an update saying that following scans earlier today, Gilbert will now undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair damage to his knee from the injury sustained in last night’s game.
The club has also said that the surgery is not to address his ACL but for some structural damage. We don not yet know how much time Gilbert will miss but it is expected to be at least several weeks with a more accurate recovery time to be determined after the surgery is completed.
The club has also said that Lenny Hayes, who was a late withdrawal for last night’s game, has sustained a minor calf strain and he will miss 2-3 weeks of football.
